The Editorial Function
Editing is not correction. It is the act of understanding what a piece of writing is trying to do, and helping it do that more completely. On what editors actually do, and why it matters.
The popular image of an editor is someone who corrects. They fix the grammar, tighten the sentences, catch the errors. This is real work and it matters. It is also the least interesting part of what editing is.
The more interesting part is structural. It is the question of whether the piece does what it is trying to do — and whether what it is trying to do is the right thing.
What Editing Actually Is
Editing begins with reading. Not reading for errors, but reading to understand the argument. What is this piece claiming? What evidence does it marshal? Where does the logic hold and where does it slip? What is the writer assuming the reader already knows?
These questions are not about correctness. They are about coherence. A piece can be grammatically perfect and argumentatively incoherent. It can be stylistically elegant and structurally broken. Editing addresses the deeper problem.
The best editors I have worked with share a particular quality: they understand the piece better than the writer does at the moment of submission. Not because they are smarter, but because they are outside it. The writer is too close to see the shape. The editor can.
The Structural Edit
A structural edit asks: does this piece have a spine? Is there a central claim, and does everything in the piece serve that claim? Are the sections in the right order? Does the opening earn the reader's attention? Does the ending justify the journey?
These are not small questions. Answering them sometimes means moving large sections, cutting material the writer is attached to, or identifying that the piece begins on page three. None of this is comfortable. All of it is necessary.
The structural edit is also where the most value is created. A well-structured piece with imperfect sentences is more useful than a beautifully written piece that does not know what it is arguing.
The Editorial Relationship
Good editing requires trust. The writer has to believe that the editor is in service of the work, not imposing a preference. The editor has to be honest enough to say what is not working, and skilled enough to explain why.
This is a relationship, not a transaction. The best editorial work happens over time, as the editor develops an understanding of how the writer thinks and what they are trying to build.
